IN FOCUS 50 BOEING FRONTIERS / JUNE 2013 RELIABLE SOURCE The first of 12 V-22 Ospreys assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps Helicopter Squadron 1, which is responsible for transporting the president of the United States and his staff, is introduced last month at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. Built by Boeing and partner Bell Helicopter, the V-22s will be used to carry support staff and news media who travel with the president, but not the commander in chief. The Osprey’s unique tilt-rotor design allows it to cruise like a fixed-wing aircraft and take off and land vertically like a helicopter. It has seen extensive duty in Afghanistan with the Marines and Air Force Special Operations Command and has played vital roles in humanitarian missions. PHOTO: U.S. MARINE CORPS
