SOUPING UP THE SUPER HORNET With the Advanced Super Hornet, customers can select from a suite of enhancements that can be retrofitted to existing F/A-18 Super Hornets or included on new ones. These options are also available for the Growler, the electronic warfare version of the aircraft. INTERNAL INFRARED SEARCH AND TRACK Embedded in a low-profile configuration within the aircraft, this feature offers long-range detection of threats without the use of radar. CONFORMAL FUEL TANKS Add up to 260 nautical miles (300 miles, or 480 kilometers) of combat range. ENHANCED ENGINES Additional thrust of 20 percent, resulting in significant acceleration and maximum speed increases, as well as improved fuel consumption. ENCLOSED WEAPONS POD Allows the aircraft to carry an internal weapons mix in a stealthy configuration. The pod can be added or removed on the carrier deck as needed. STEALTH ENHANCEMENTS Conformal fuel tanks and an enclosed weapons pod, along with other enhancements, make the aircraft even less visible to enemy radar. NEXT- GENERATION COCKPIT Includes a large 11-by-19-inch (28-by-48- centimeter) touch-screen display. BOEING FRONTIERS / DECEMBER 2013–JANUARY 2014 25
