Hot idea to cool down

Craig ChristyImagine getting energy from the diesel exhaust of 18-wheelers, or an environment free of diesel or heat pollution. For most mortals, this would seem hard to fathom—but not for Craig Christy.

A Boeing engineer based at Huntington Beach, Calif., Christy spends his "free" time hot on the trail of a new way to cool things down. Christy is working toward a new way to refrigerate the hundreds of thousands of truck trailers that carry food goods and other precious essentials, crisscrossing the world's highways day and night.

Two Chinook CH-47sIf your name is going to be eternally linked with others, it's nice to be in good company, and this is definitely good company: Neil Armstrong, Charles Lindbergh, Wernher von Braun, Amelia Earhart, Chuck Yeager and the Wright Brothers.

They are just a few of the many illustrious aviation pioneers whom Frank Piasecki recently joined as a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame.

Piasecki, a trailblazer in the development of helicopters, was born in 1919. He became fascinated at an early age with aviation technology, which at the time was an exciting new field.
