MCDONNELL DOUGLAS DIVISION WINS CALIFORNIA QUALITY AWARD

LONG BEACH, Calif., Jan. 9, 1997 -- McDonnell Douglas' Military Transport Aircraft (MTA) division has been selected for the Governor's Golden State Quality Award for Excellence in Management, California Governor Pete Wilson's office has announced.

Military Transport Aircraft, which manufactures the C-17 Globemaster III cargo airplane for the U.S. Air Force, was one of only two organizations honored for 1996. It is the first time in the awards' three-year history that the Excellence in Management award has been presented.

The award commends MTA for clearly articulating quality values that are "integrated into the company's management system" and for using data and information "to drive quality excellence and to improve competitive performance." It recognizes MTA's success at integrating quality requirements into the business planning process, and the achievement of strong product and process quality levels.

"Having won the Quality in Management award doesn't end our drive toward quality," said Randy Mizer, vice president of program integration. "The competition becomes stronger each day, and we need to constantly reaffirm our commitment to excellence in all that we do."

Governor Wilson echoed that sentiment. "Quality is one of the principal engines driving California business success in the marketplace and, in turn, the economic success of our entire state," he said. "Companies that adopt quality management practices and then test their progress have one thing in common -- they are all winners."

The Governor's Golden State Quality Awards are administered by the California Center for Quality, Education and Development, which was established in 1993.
