Atlanta-based UPS currently operates 51 Boeing 757 freighters from its all- points international hub in Louisville, Ky. The airline now has 18 of the standard-body freighters on order and holds an additional 36 options. Today's order for five 757 freighters is valued at about $300 million, and is for deliveries beginning in May 1997. The airplanes will be powered by Rolls Royce engines. United Parcel Service was the launch customer for both Boeing 757 and Boeing 767 freighter aircraft. The 757 was first ordered in December 1985 and went into service with UPS in September 1987. The 767-300 freighter was launched with orders for 30 aircraft, and 30 options, in January 1993. The airline is scheduled to begin operation of its first wide-body freighter in October. The Boeing 757 freighter has a main deck and lower hold cargo capacity of 8,430 cubic feet, and represents about 29 per cent of UPS' daily main deck cargo capacity. Worldwide, UPS moved over three billion documents and packages last year. |
