Dash 80 The Boeing 367-80 was a single prototype for the first U.S. commercial jetliner, the 707, as well as the first jet air-refueling tanker, the KC-135. Better known as the Dash 80, it flew for the first time on July 15, 1954, and was responsible for proving many Boeing technologies and innovations. The Dash 80 combined aerodynamic and structural features of the Boeing B-47 and B-52 jet bombers. About a year after that first flight, famed Boeing test pilot Tex Johnston drew widespread attention to the new airplane when he unexpectedly performed two barrel rolls over Seattle’s Lake Washington, witnessed by a large crowd watching hydroplane races. •
