Snapshot Victory role A Boeing B-29 Superfortress performs a flyby of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., May 8, one of dozens of period airplanes passing in review to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of hostilities in Europe during World War II . Boeing started production of the B-29 in 1943, and nearly 4,000 were built. The world’s heaviest production airplane at the time, the B-29 had innovative features including pressurized crew compartments for high-altitude flying and guns fired by remote control. Boeing and its heritage companies were wellrepresented in the Arsenal of Democracy flyover, with aircraft including the North American P-51 Mustang and B-25 Mitchell, the Boeing B-17 and Stearman Kaydet, and the Douglas C-47 Skytrain and SBD Dauntless.
