Assembly is well under way at Boeing of an unmanned aircraft known as Phantom Eye that will be able to stay aloft for several days at altitudes up to 65,000 feet (20,000 meters) performing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The brainchild of Boeing’s Phantom Works, the High Altitude Long Endurance demonstrator is scheduled to make its first flight in 2011.

With highest honors

The International Space Station, for which Boeing is the prime contractor, is considered to be one of history’s great engineering accomplishments. Station teams recently were honored with the Collier Trophy, the aerospace industry’s highest award. Boeing also has formally turned over to NASA the on-orbit station segments built by the United States—the equivalent of a bill of sale.

Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet, which is built in St. Louis, will give the Royal Australian Air Force what one of its squadron commanders calls a “quantum leap” in capability over the existing F-111s that have served the RAAF since the early 1970s. Australia has ordered 24 Super Hornets, the first five of which were recently delivered.
