How to speak like you’re on the ‘Street’

Like those in many other professional enclaves, members of the financial analyst community use their own lingo. Here’s a layman’s guide to the language of Wall Street.

Valuation: Determination of the value of a company’s stock based on earnings and the market value of assets.

Analyst rating: Evaluation by securities analysts of expected financial performance and total shareholder return of a company’s stock over a period of time, usually the next 12 to 18 months.

Outperform/buy rating: A company’s stock appears attractively valued, and total return is expected to exceed that of the market over the next 12 months. Investors should consider accumulating shares at current price. (The opposite condition can bring an underperform/sell rating.)

Market perform/hold rating: A company’s stock appears appropriately valued and total stock return should be in line with the market over next 12 months; current owners should continue holding shares.
