MD-11 Combi Background

The MD-11 combi offers outstanding passenger and cargo flexibility. Its overall specifications -- wingspan, length, fuel capacity, service doors -- are the same as the standard MD-11 passenger version. As a result, the combi can be handled at the same gates and with basically the same ground service equipment as a regular passenger aircraft.

The MD-11 combi incorporates a 160-inch wide by 102-inch high (406.4- by 259-cm) main-deck cargo door at the rear of the fuselage. The 160-inch width enables the combi to handle 20-foot (6-m) long containers.

The combi can be ordered in a variety of configurations, depending on customer requirements, providing several different ratios of passenger-to-cargo capacity. The combi may also be operated as a passenger airplane with no main-deck pallets.
